5 Design Tips to Make Your Home Feel Cozy This Winter

From soft rugs to thicker curtains, explore five ways to beat the chilly weather

When the weather outside is frightful, there’s nothing better than staying indoors next to a fire that’s oh-so-delightful. And even though Californians don’t have to battle the same winter storms as our East Coast counterparts, it’s still fun to make our homes feel appropriately cozy for the holidays. If you’re looking for ways to transform your California home into a holiday wonderland, here are five steps to follow:

Decorate With Greenery

Nothing says Christmas like an evergreen tree—but there are plenty of other ways to spice up your home with greenery. Consider purchasing some real or faux greenery or asking your local Christmas tree farm for leftover trimmings when you’re picking up your tree. You can easily drape it over fireplace mantels, stairways, chandeliers, and tabletops for a decidedly cozy look.

Crank Up the Fire

Stay extra snug and warm this winter by making the most of your fireplace. If your fireplace uses real wood, be sure to keep plenty of it on hand (as well as the necessary tools and supplies) so that you can easily start a fire. Fireplaces instantly make a space feel more inviting and comfortable, so once you get one started you can gather the whole family nearby to play games, roast marshmallows, and drink hot chocolate. You can also make a special dinner feel more romantic and intimate by setting up the table and chairs next to the fireplace. If you don’t have a fireplace, dot candles throughout your home to add extra warmth.

Use Rugs and Throws to Add Warmth

Hardwood, tile, and limestone floors are a gorgeous design detail, but during the winter months, they can be downright cold. Solve this problem by layering rugs throughout your living spaces. In addition to creating visual variety, the rugs will keep your family warm and cozy all winter long. And, of course, you can also keep slippers by the door to further combat cold weather. Stock up on throws made from soft materials (think cotton or cashmere) and leave them throughout the house so you can easily get one whenever you need it.

Switch Out Your Curtains

Trade your curtains for heavy drapes (such as velvet) that will safeguard against the cold and add some much-needed texture and variety to your walls. In addition to keeping drafts out, drapes can also be closed to create an intimate, cozy look in your living space.

Add Some Holiday Decorations

From baskets of pinecones to poinsettias, holiday decorations add undeniable joy to any room. Whether you’re in the mood to string stockings over the fireplace or hang up some mistletoe, decorating for the holidays is sure to make you feel warm and cozy inside.
