In case you’re not not familiar with the acronym “UHNW,” it stands for “ultra high net worth individuals.” According to Credit Suisse’s 2014 Global Wealth Report, there are 128,200 UHNW individuals in the world whose net worth exceeds $50 million. According to leading financial analysts, the number of UHNW individuals has grown rapidly in recent years. In fact, between 2008 and mid-2014, the numbers are staggering. There was a 54% rise in the number of millionaires, a 106% increase in the number with wealth above $100 million, and more than double the number of billionaires.

This segment comprises the richest people in the world that control a disproportionate amount of global wealth. Ultra high net worth is generally quoted in terms of liquid assets over a certain figure. The exact amount differs by financial institution and region. The majority of UHNWs, or 49%, reside in the United States. Why is that? A recent article in The Huffington Post says the answer is simple. America is really, really good at creating wealthy individuals. Whether you are a UHNWI or not, you might be interested in learning some surprising statistics surrounding this elite group of individuals when it comes to real estate:

• 72% prefer the real estate as their preferred “safe” investment. This is up 30% from five years ago.
• Many seek a garden oasis complete with outdoor fireplaces and separate guest houses
• It’s all about the view.
• They prefer to purchase properties before they hit the market.
• They expect something extraordinary.
• They relish privacy.
• The world’s wealthy wants the absolute best and they are willing to pay for it.
• They want someone of their own caliber representing them on their sale or purchase.
