Explore how to enjoy Sonoma’s most magical winter event

The most wonderful time of the year is right around the corner, and Sonoma is already getting into the holiday spirit. The Northern California destination may be best-known as a world-famous wine region, but locally it’s also recognized as a holiday hot spot. Each year, the City of Sonoma (alongside the Sonoma Tourism Improvement District and a slew of sponsors) coordinates an annual Lighting of the Sonoma Plaza to kick off the forthcoming holiday season.

This year’s Lighting of the Sonoma Plaza will take place on November 16th at the Historic Sonoma Plaza. Thousands of residents and visitors alike will flood the plaza to watch a quarter-million lights transform the city into a winter wonderland. The festivities, which kick off at 5 p.m. and end at 8 p.m., will include live music and guest performances. Several local food trucks will be on hand to serve up mouthwatering meals as guests mill around and enjoy the holiday displays set up around the eight-acre Sonoma Plaza. Mark your calendar and bring a few friends to sip hot chocolate and meet new acquaintances during the holiday bash.

Can’t make the ceremony? Don’t worry—you don’t have to miss out on the fun completely. Each day throughout the holiday season, the lights will turn on at 4:45 p.m. so guests can fully immerse themselves in the holiday spirit.

The Lighting of the Sonoma Plaza serves as a precursor to the holiday season in Sonoma Valley, which is marked by special activities held during November, December, and January. Other holiday events that ought not be missed include a Thanksgiving buffet, holiday craft fest, Christmas craft fair, and holiday open house. Whether you’re a long-time local or an out-of-town guest looking for a fun way to incorporate some Christmas cheer into your daily routine, the Lighting of the Sonoma Plaza is an event that you’re sure to enjoy.
